A fast method to measure the thickness of removed layer from etching of SSNTD based on EDXRF

چکیده
Solid state nuclear track detectors are commonly used for measurements of concentrations of radon gas and/or radon progeny. All these measurements depend critically on the thickness of the removed layer during etching. However, the thickness of removed layer calculated using the etching period does not necessarily provide a su7ciently accurate measure of the thickness. For example, the bulk etch rate depends on the strength of stirring during etching for the LR 115 detector. We propose here to measure the thickness of the removed layer by using energy-dispersive X-ray <uorescence spectrometry. In the present work, a reference silver nitrate pellet is placed beneath the LR 115 detector, and the <uorescence X-ray intensity for silver is then measured. We have found a linear relationship between the X-ray intensity and the thickness of the removed layer for LR 115 detector. This provides a fast method to measure the thickness of removed layer from etching of LR 115 detector. However, this method was found to be inapplicable for the CR-39 detector. Therefore, alternative methods have yet to be explored for the CR-39 detector. c © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Non-destructive measurement of active-layer thickness of LR 115 SSNTD

متن کاملFast and non-destructive determination of active-layer thickness of LR 115 SSNTD using a color commercial document scanner
Measurements using the LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) depend critically on the removed thickness of the active layer during etching, which cannot be controlled by the etching period alone. For example, the bulk etch rate depends significantly on the strength of stirring during etching. We propose here a fast, inexpensive and nondestructive method based on a color commercial d...
متن کاملX-ray irradiation induced degradation of cellulose nitrate
Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry was previously proposed to measure the thickness of the cellulose nitrate layer of he commonly used LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD). The present work is devoted to the investigation whether the X-ray radiation nvolved in EDXRF spectrometry will induce degradation of the cellulose nitrate. For this purpose, Fourier trans...
متن کاملBulk etch characteristics of colorless LR 115 SSNTD
The colorless LR 115 solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) (from DOSIRAD) is based on cellulose nitrate and was first studied in view of its applicability in radiobiological experiments with alpha particles. In this paper, the bulk etch characteristics were studied. We first showed that the shape of the alpha-particle tracks are irregular with blurred contours under the optical microscope....
متن کاملDerivation of V function for LR 115 SSNTD from its partial sensitivity to 222Rn and its short-lived progeny.
Solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) have been widely applied for measurements of environmental concentrations of 222Rn and its progeny. The V function for an SSNTD is important for understanding the track development in the SSNTD as well as for real life applications. The partial sensitivity rhoi of the LR 115 detector applied in the bare mode to 222Rn and its short-lived progeny is re...
